Sonoma County Has Its Faults: A Rock ‘n’ Roll Story

Thursday, March 24, 2016

5:30 p.m.

Sebastopol Grange

You call Sonoma County home and embrace its beauty and rural character. Although scenic and apparently peaceful, we live in the California Coast Range, one of the country's most geologically hazardous areas. Do you know how many faults cross Sonoma County? There are 2 dangerous active faults, and many other fault breaks that could be hazardous...and they're still finding more  Where in the County do you expect the greatest shaking to occur? Do City and County Planners aim to reduce hazards for new developments? Not necessarily... Dr. Jane Nielson is a registered Professional Geologist, with degrees in geochemistry and petrology, and has worked 18 years as a field and research geologist for the US Geological Survey. In this presentation she explains Sonoma County's unique geological history and how it impacts us moving forward. She will also discuss the origin of these hazards, why we always have to account for their effects, and how best to protect yourself and your family.  Knowledge is power and being informed of the realities of living in Sonoma County is essential, as our communities rapidly grow and expand. Details: The mission of the Kortum Legacy Speaker Series is to provide unique environmental educational opportunities for our community by presenting engaging and topically relevant speakers.  Bill Kortum believed in the power of grassroots environmental activism, and activism starts with education.  Our Kortum Legacy Speaker Series is a tribute to Bill and his long career of activism.
